LANXESS at European Coatings Show 2007, Nuremberg, May 8 to 10, Hall 4, Stand 456 Wide-ranging expertise Pigments and more for the paint and coatings industry

Leverkusen - The LANXESS Group is presenting a comprehensive and modern portfolio - ranging from inorganic pigments and inorganic and organic pigment preparations to biocides to paint and coating additives - to an interested trade audience at the European Coatings Show.

"In keeping with our stand’s motto ‘Energizing Coatings: Pigments and more,’ tailored specialties that enable our customers to precisely adapt their formulations to the respective practical requirements will be at the fore in Nuremberg," says Dr. Volker Schneider, Stand Manager and Head of the Competence Center Paint within the LANXESS Inorganic Pigments business unit. According to Schneider, this requires not just the proper products, but also applications expertise and regulatory know-how. The latter is increasingly important with regard to regulations on VOC emissions, the influence of REACH or the consequences of the Biocide Directive.

The Inorganic Pigments business unit is showcasing high-performance pigments from its Bayferrox line, such as the new Bayferrox 360. This iron oxide black combines high tinting strength with a bluish black color shade that is very popular with customers. Special yellow pigments from the high-performance line, such as Bayferrox 3910 LV or Bayferrox 915, enable the formulation of low-viscosity pigment preparations required by the pastes industry. Finally, the special properties of yellow pigments with higher thermal stability from the Colortherm line and heat-stable black and brown pigments make these particularly suitable for coil coating or powder coating applications.

Unlike with iron oxides, which are per se ecologically safe, ecological aspects are a primary concern with organic pigments. "With Levanyl Gran and Levanox Gran, our microgranulates containing no solvent or nonylphenol ethoxylate, we have a comprehensive answer to these concerns," assures Carlos Estrada, Marketing Manager for Colorants in the Functional Chemicals business unit. LANXESS also offers the ecologically advantageous Levanyl LF and Levanox LF lines of waterborne pigment dispersions.

"Biocides for paints and coatings face a dual challenge: On the one hand, they are expected to be effective and provide in-can preservation or also serve as a film fungicide to protect the coating from algae or mold infestation. At the same time, the industry is facing increasingly stringent environmental legislation in the form of the European Biocide Directive, which calls for particularly environment-friendly products and technologies with slow-release properties," explains Dr. Frank Sauer of the Material Protection Products business unit. Modern LANXESS products, such as Preventol A 6-D and Preventol A 19-D for film preservation or modern cobiocides like Preventol 4-S and Preventol A 5-S for antifouling coatings, already satisfy these new requirements and thus give the customers certainty.

Additives have been the core business of the LANXESS subsidiary Borchers GmbH for more than 70 years. "As a partner of innovative companies, it’s a "Must" for us to be most innovative as well," says Managing Director Dr. Peter Manshausen. One example out of a series of several new polymeric dispersants is Borchi Gen 0451. This PU-based material is a universal, VOC-free, 100 % dispersing agent that very effectively disperses acidic carbon blacks in both waterborne and solventborne systems to produce an attractive blue-black color shade which is quite difficult to be obtained with other dispersants. Manshausen has high expectations for a group of new Borchers AF antifoams as well. These ultrafine multiphase systems are transparent, most effective and easily to be introduced into a paint without high shear stress. In opposite to most commercially available standard defoamers, the new Borchers AF- Series offers an excellent long term stability/activity, not causing any turbidity - even in clear coats - or separation of solids. Borchers experts are tentatively scheduled to introduce these and other novel additives in five product presentations at the European Coatings Show.
