Press release: Ecologists of LUKOIL Visited the TANECO Complex

 A delegation of managers and professionals representing nature protection services of PJSC LUKOIL headed by Igor Zaikin, Head of Department of industrial safety, ecology and scientific and technical works visited JSC TANECO. The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with environmental facilities of the NPiNHZ Complex, as well as discuss the issues of environmental safety.

The interest of the industry colleagues in TANECO is related with the use of the most up-to-date technologies in the construction and operation, which ensure a high level of ecological safety of the new plant. In the construction of the NPiNHZ Complex in Nizhnekamsk TATNEFT from the very beginning focused on the introduction of the best available technologies (BAT) of the domestic and the world industries.

As a successful application of BAT, the guests were presented a combined hydrocracking unit, delayed coking unit, flare system, plant purification works, and an industrial waste landfill.

Specifically, the waste treatment facilities of the plant aroused much interest among the professionals of PJSC LUKOIL. By their characteristics, they are ones of the most modern in the Russian oil refining. The efficiency of wastewater treatment at the TANECO Complex amounts to 99.9 percent by some metrics. Such a result has been achieved through the introduction of such methods as separation, ultrafiltration on membrane bioreactors, sorption and ultraviolet decontamination. Only last year, the TANECO’s purification works, which operate on a closed cycle principle, ensured the return to production of more than 1.5 million cubic meters of treated wastewater.

The industrial waste landfill was demonstrated to the visit participants. The design of this facility is unique in terms allowing to move from the practice of dumping industrial waste to their long-term storage – until effective and safe new methods of treatment or regeneration come into existence. The base of the entire area of the landfill includes a reliable impermeable geomembrane screen, which meets the requirements of the International Institute of Geosynthetics standards, which ensures the complete environmental safety of the facility.

In the central operator room, the professionals of PJSC "LUKOIL" got acquainted with the system of the automated production processes management. Application of modern digital technologies allows not only monitoring the production process of the enterprise and making adjustments, but also predicting possible failures, which enables performing the necessary work before the emergence of situations that can lead to adverse consequences.

At the end of the visit, Igor Zaikin pointed out that TATNEFT Company had very competently and responsibly approached the task of ensuring environmentally safety of all operating and constructed works. In his opinion, such enterprises as TANECO dispel the myth that the oil industry is a priori a significant source of environmental pollution. Assessing the contacts of the environmentalists of the two companies, he emphasized that LUKOIL and TATNEFT were not competitors in the field of environmental protection, but colleagues and the continuous exchange of experience between the companies allows using the best practices and technologies that ensure sustainable development.
