Press release: SIBUR published its 2017 sustainability report

Moscow, August 13, 2018. SIBUR published its second sustainability report prepared in line with the core version of GRI sustainability reporting standards (GRI SRS). The report captures information about the company’s strategy, policies, approaches to management, efforts in the areas of economic performance, environment and social development while also offering an insight into the company’s contribution to the development of local communities in the areas of its presence. The scope of the report covers the results of 2017 Russia-based operations of PJSC SIBUR Holding, as well as its subsidiaries and affiliates with SIBUR’s stake of 50 or more per cent.

In 2017, SIBUR’s primary focus was on implementing a major investment project to build a world-class petrochemical complex in Tobolsk, recruiting skilled workforce to fill new job vacancies, putting the company on a course towards digital transformation of the industry. Throughout the year, about 10,000 construction personnel contributed to the work on the construction site with construction materials being supplied by over 70 contractors from Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Tobolsk, and other cities. 900 engineers and technicians received advanced training to prepare them for work at the new production facilities.

The company continued with the implementation of its targeted environmental programs whose overall 2017 budget exceeded 1.4 bln rub. As a result, the company’s environmental impact index was reduced from 4.2 to 3.9 points whereas its energy saving program helped save 1,479 mln rub. Thanks to the company’s consistent efforts to improve work safety, the number of machinery-related incidents dropped by 43% compared to 2016. All sites have implemented an electronic program allowing to assess the promptness and adequacy of employees’ response to emergencies. In 2017, the program was used to test 3,805 facilities’ employees. 

In addition to training sessions on occupational health and safety, educational programs were set up for employees to develop their soft skills, as well as professional and management competences. More than 13,500 members of the staff went through these programs over the course of the year. Under the company’s Small-Step Improvement program, employees submitted more than 57,000 suggestions, out of which over 34,000 got implemented at the company’s production facilities.

The company’s interactions with regional partners which are meant to foster sustainable development of local communities in the regions of the company’s presence are carried out within the framework of Formula for Good Deeds, the company’s corporate charitable program. In 2017, 14 special inter-regional projects got implemented in partnership with leading operators in the areas of education, sport, and culture. Non-profits and social services organizations in the company’s host cities were awarded 130 grants to implement public interest projects. In the city of Tobolsk, its residents took part in the selection of the projects: more than 9,000 (9 per cent of the city’s population) residents of Tobolsk participated in the on-line vote.

In preparing the report, the company was guided by the provisions of the Social Charter of the Russian Business, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, provisions of the UN Global Compact, as well as the international social responsibility (ISO 26000) and reporting (GRI) standards. The materials included in the report had undergone a review in light of CDP’s disclosure guidance for companies and the requirements of other rating systems, including RSPP’s sustainable development indices.

A variety of communication channels were used throughout 2017 to obtain feedback from the stakeholders in order to ensure that what the stakeholders believe to be of material significance is duly captured in the report. These included face-to-face meetings, ad hoc surveys, review of calls placed to the hot line number, as well as a dedicated study of pressing social issues that affect the regions of the company’s presence, and a survey of grant recipients under the Formula for Good Deeds program.

As noted by Dmitry Konov, PJSC SIBUR Holding’s Chairman of the Management Board, the “company takes particular care to measure the social and environmental effects brought about by our activities while trying to create value for all our stakeholders, all the way from our shareholders and investors to residents of our host regions, and to help address relevant issues of Russia’s socio-economic development”.

In September, the report will be submitted to the Council on nonfinancial reporting at the Russian Union of Entrepreneurs and Industrialists to undergo the procedure of public assurance.
