Press release: Gazprom and MegaFon broaden cooperation in communications field

Sergey Khomyakov, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, and Sergey Soldatenkov, Director General of MegaFon, today signed at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2018 an Agreement of Cooperation.

The document is aimed at broadening the mutually beneficial cooperation in the communications field. Specifically, MegaFon will improve the quality of its coverage in the Gazprom Group’s areas of operations across the country, including remote regions. The mobile operator is set to expand the infrastructure for data transmission via fiber-optic and radio relay communications lines. Gazprom, in turn, will create the conditions for the installation of MegaFon’s telecommunications equipment and communications lines at its facilities.

At present, the companies are getting ready to launch several such projects so as to ensure better coverage provided by the MegaFon communications network at Gazprom’s facilities in the Amur Region and St. Petersburg.

The Agreement also includes joint actions for information security.

Background

MegaFon is a leading Russian telecommunications operator. Based on its mobile network, the company set up a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) for Gazprom Telecom. As part of its inter-operator relations, MegaFon leases out its backbone communications systems to Gazprom Telecom for the provision of telecommunications services.
